Igreja de S. Gonçalo de Amarante: Restoration of the Santissimo Chapel

CRERE, was responsible for the restoration of the mural, artistic and stucco altar of the Santissimo Chapel at the Church of S. Gonçalo de Amarante (National Heritage Site since 1910). The work took place between April and August 2010.

The Santissimo Chapel, by Luigi Chiari (second half of the century), is a set whose artistic program is based on decorative plaster art, mural painting and in gilted and polychrome sculpture. The condition of the whole group, reflected a deterioration due to water infiltration from the covering.

Crere was faced with a huge picture of structural weakness, which was reflected in the loss of adhesion between the different substrates (paint/plaster/woods); performing consolidation procedures were essential to allow the stabilization of paint and ensure their original integrity. The additional work focused on chromatic duplication and reintegration properly supported in existing historical records.
